Job Scope

Full-time Senior Instructor to 40 hours a week.The Senior Instructor is responsible for leading and ensuring the smooth running of the programs, including the curriculum, course materials and resources management. The Senior Instructor will deliver scheduled curriculum effectively, teach with learning centered approaches, and provide meaningful feedback, guidance, and support to students on a regular basis.

The Senior Instructor will work closely with all staff members to help create a culture of diversity, inclusion, respect, exploration, imagination, discovery, critical thinking and development of the actors instrument that supports the overall vision of the Acting program. The instructor is a team player and possesses a strong sense of commitment and responsibility to the organization as a whole. They have the ability to work across the organization as necessary with events, marketing, and collaborations with other departments. The Senior Instructor will maintain an instructional load of 3 to 5 courses per term (depending on the schedule), including some online development and teaching. This role will report directly to the Head of Acting for Film & Television.

Core Responsibilities

Senior Instructor Responsibilities:

  • Instruct courses – workload to be assigned each term as per schedule.
  • Provide guidance to students in a respectful and professional manner with an awareness on diversity and inclusion.
  • Accountable and responsible for successful stream delivery and stream faculty
  • Provide set office hours for administration and student duties
  • Senior contact person in communication with the Head of Department on all relevant issues for staff and students
  • Provide mentorship, onboarding and support to new Instructors within stream as necessary
  • Guide and innovate as per the mission and desired outcomes reflecting the actors craft and industry trends, including Online programs
  • Coordinate with the Head of Department, Educational Administration, and Marketing by ensuring all resources for programs are in place for the student experience.
  • Proficient in Moodle, a learning management system (grading, attendance, assignments, lesson support materials)
  • Administrative and data management for all stream course materials: course outlines, lesson plans, assignments, rubrics, support materials, resources, and handouts.
  • Participate in events, marketing sessions, workshops and initiatives and opportunities to support VFS when available.
  • Responsible for mentoring student term cohort throughout the year.
  • Supporting cross department collaboration
  • Supporting hourly instructors within the acting department
  • Assist in training and onboarding new instructors
  • Supporting curriculum building within the acting department, including the proposal of new initiatives
  • Other duties as required by the Head of Department.

Support/Leadership for students:

  • Term mentor for up to two cohorts of AC Students.
  • Student support for day to day educational needs
  • Understanding of the school resources and protocols in support of students
  • Understanding the departments Safe and Inclusive Acting Education Practices (SIAEP)
  • Manage and coordinate the onboarding of new students including voluntary disclosures
  • Support for grad ceremonies and other department events
  • Mid-program evaluations, grading and attendance reviews
  • Manage all first level student issues meetings (attendance/disciplinary/academic/personal/curriculum issues)
  • Liaise with HOD and ED Admin on all serious Student issues
  • Support term presentations/grad days/events
  • Provide support for Alumni (letters of reference, referrals, career counseling)

Support/Leadership for other faculty:

  • Point person for instructors in acting stream Acting/Improv/Text Analysis, including support, onboarding, training of CR, Moodle etc.
  • Mentor new staff joining VFS Acting program.
  • Communicate regularly with all stream Instructors, and coordinate revisions and changes as necessary with support from the team.
  • Coordinate and collate all instructor evaluations for each term.
  • Manage each student mid-program sessions and flag issues as necessary

Support for Administration/Curriculum/Program:

  • Liaise with the team on scheduling, teacher evaluations, new staff, and program curriculum as necessary.
  • Provide support on select events for the program including Connect, Summer Intensives, creative breaks, outreach, audition vetting, open house events, orientations, industry events, partners and marketing
  • Provide support for mid program meetings, online courses, meet and greet term starts, week nine support, Moodle upkeep.

Job Qualifications

  • Relevant post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree and 3+ years industry experience; or, 10+ years of industry experience.
  • Prior post-secondary teaching or administrative experience is necessary (or demonstrated ability to lead workshops, lectures, and seminars)
  • Resume demonstrating a high caliber of professional work.
  • The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to lead workshops, lectures, and seminars.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of current industry trends and developments.
  • Diversity of experience in various modalities, styles and genres in acting for film, TV, web, and/or theatre an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Zoom, Moodle, and industry apps/resources
  • Knowledge of current industry/actor education trends and evolution.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and commitment to EDI principles and practices
